    Clean the area

    Scuff the surface with sandpaper to take off rust, paint or grease. Clean metal is what makes the bond hold.

    Heat the part, not the rod

    This is the whole trick. Play the flame over the metal around the spot, not on the rod. The metal should get hot, not glowing.

    Touch the rod down

    Against the hot metal it melts on its own and flows into the joint. Let it cool for 30 seconds and it is done.

    Tip: if the rod balls up instead of flowing, your part is not hot enough yet. Give the metal another 10 seconds of heat.

    The eight things people ask us most before buying

    Do I need a welding machine or electricity?

    No, and that is the whole point. The alloy melts at about 716 F, far below the melting point of aluminum. A flame is enough: a windproof lighter, a butane kitchen torch or a small propane torch. No outlet, no helmet, no settings.

    Is a plain lighter really enough?

    For small parts and thin sheet, yes, and our customers do it every day. For a thick or heavy part that soaks up a lot of heat, a $15 propane torch will be far more comfortable. We would rather tell you plainly.

    Which metals does it work on?

    Aluminum and aluminum alloys, copper, brass, zinc, cast iron and galvanized steel. You can also join two different metals, for example aluminum onto copper. On thick stainless steel the hold is more limited.

    Do I have to buy flux or a cleaner?

    No. The flux is already inside the rod, so there is nothing to add. A quick sanding of the surface before you start is all it takes to get a good grip.

    The rod balls up and will not flow, why?

    This is the most common mistake: you are heating the rod instead of the part. Play the flame over the metal around the area for ten to fifteen seconds, then touch the rod to the hot metal. It will flow into the joint on its own.

    Does the joint actually hold?

    Yes, as long as you clean the surface first. Rust, paint and grease stop the alloy from gripping. This is low-temperature brazing, ideal for patching, sealing, reattaching and rejoining around the house. For a structural part under heavy load or constant vibration, call a professional.

    My rods arrived snapped, is that normal?

    Yes. The alloy is deliberately brittle when cold, and that is exactly what lets it melt so low. A rod that arrives in two pieces is used in exactly the same way and loses none of its properties.
